Things To Do
The beauty of Healdsburg is unsurpassed - centered in the Northern California wine country, visitors often compare the area to Tuscany. Browse our restaurants or go shopping, antiquing and wine tasting around the Healdsburg Plaza. Take a walking tour of our historic homes, get a soothing massage at one of our spas, or linger in our museums and wine library. Meander through the Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley along our Farm Trails and Art Trails to the farms, wineries, studios and galleries that capture the area's essence in food, wine and art.
Outdoor recreation and family fun activities abound: Travel along the backroads for picnics under redwood trees in one of our many parks. Road cycling is enjoyed year-round. For bike enthusiasts - the Harvest Century Bicycle Tour is held in July. Experience hot air balloon rides through the vineyards and rolling hillsides. Our golf courses are among the best in the SF Bay Area.
The Russian River runs through Healdsburg, and visitors enjoy beaches, swimming, canoeing and kayaking, all the way to the Pacific Coast. Ride or drive the Coast to enjoy sightseeing, walking on beaches, whale watching, bird watching, or rock climbing! Enjoy a scenic driving tour to San Francisco, the Napa Valley, Mendocino, Redwood Empire and the North Coast, all within a day's reach.

FISHING
Healdsburg hosts a wide variety of world class fishing opportunities. The Russian River is home to some of the finest Steelhead fishing on the West Coast and is prime during the months of January, February and March. This is predominantly a fish hatchery for hard fighting steelhead, averaging 8 to 12 pounds but the occasional 20 pounder is caught every year. While there is some fly-fishing, because of high turbidity found in the river this time of year, conventional drift fishing gear is the norm. In the late summer and fall the Alexander Valley section of the Russian River is home to a large population of Small Mouth bass that can be caught on a wide variety of lures.
Lake Sonoma, found only minutes from downtown Healdsburg, is a relatively new man made reservoir but is home to a wide variety of sport fish. There is bass fishing at Lake Sonoma and off Hot Springs Road in Cloverdale. The most sought after is the largemouth bass, but there is also a large population of Small mouth Bass as well. Spring is the best time to target these gamefish with all the usual assortments of both top water baits and rubber worms working well. Largemouth bass to 12 pounds have been successfully landed but the average fish will run 2 pounds. In addition there is a healthy population of black Crappie. Red Ears Sunfish and Bluegill. Catfish to 20 pounds have been landed as well as the occasional landlocked Steelhead.
Bodega Bay is the closet ocean port to Healdsburg and during the summer month’s fantastic Salmon fishing is available. There is also a good population of Rockfish, Halibut and Dungeness Crab that can be sought in season. The fall months are when the Albacore Tuna venture close enough to shore and are targeted by the spoor fishing fleet.
